Government must not protect unproductive workers

Progressive Vision backs calls to scrap unfair dismissal regulations, following the suggestion being made in a leaked government report. Director Donna Edmunds said “The Government needs to do much more to encourage growth in this country, and that includes going much further with it’s reforms to employment law. A relaxation of unfair dismissal rules would allow companies to take risks by taking on new employees. At a time when 1million young people are out of work, this would be a great boost to the job market. Current employment law is weighted too heavily against private sector employers and allows unproductive … Continue reading

Progressive Vision welcomes increased competitiveness in higher education market

Progressive Vision welcomes the news today that A-level students are considering apprenticeships rather than university degrees due to the rising costs of tuition fees. A ComRes survey has shown that 1 in 10 A-level students are put off university by higher fees, and that one third are considering apprenticeships. Director Donna Edmunds said “In a flooded graduate job market, it is right that tuition fees prompt students to question the value of their degree. We welcome students opting instead for practical courses or entry-level jobs that will set them on the road to a financially rewarding, stable future. Our country … Continue reading

“Fewer MPs? Yes please” says PV

Progressive Vision welcomes the initial proposals on parliamentary constituency boundary changes, which will see the number of Parliamentary Constituencies cut from 650 to 600. This is certainly a step in the right direction towards reducing the onerous costs of Parliament, and making the system fairer in terms of representation. But does the reduction go far enough? We think not. The House of Commons currently costs the taxpayer approximately £500 million every year, with MPs salaries and pensions alone running up a bill of £157.2 million in 2008/9. Director Donna Edmunds said “This Government talks about austerity, and it talks about … Continue reading

PV: Government right to consider televised court sentencing

Progressive Vision: ‘Government right to consider televised court sentencing’ Progressive Vision today lends its support to Government proposals to allow sentencing in court to be televised. Director Donna Edmunds said “The courts are currently the only part of our democracy not open to televised scrutiny by the public. In this, we are behind many of our allies across the world. Broadcasting court proceedings where appropriate would afford the public a better understanding of the democracy in which we live, and allow for healthier debate over the function and conduct of our judicial system.” In an age where Tweeting from the … Continue reading

End of 60W light bulb an example of needless EU interference

End of 60W light bulb an example of needless EU interference The decision as to which type of light bulb people use in their houses should be left to the individual according to liberal think tank Progressive Vision. “It is appalling that bureaucrats in Brussels and Whitehall are intruding into the lives of householders in this petty matter”, said PV director Donna Edmunds. “As well as the principle that free citizens should be free to choose which type of light bulb they use, there are practical considerations such as the unsuitability of the new light bulbs, difficulty in disposal, and cost. … Continue reading
