THINK TANK DEMANDS BBC RELEASE FORMULA 1 COSTS UNDER FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 20 March 2008 Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think tank, has demanded that the BBC make public the costs of the rights to broadcast Formula 1 motor racing under the Freedom of Information Act. Mark Littlewood, communications director of Progressive Vision, said: “Fans of Formula One will no doubt be delighted that the world’s top motorsport competition will continue to be broadcast on a free-to-air basis. However, licence fee payers are entitled to know how much of their money has been spent by the corporation to secure these rights. “If the BBC continue to demand that all households with colour televisions should be forced to pay them over £130 a year, people can at least expect to know how their money is being spent. “The BBC is insistent that they will not release the figures for reasons of commercial confidentiality. But this hasn’t prevented BBC correspondents from openly speculating over BBC airwaves that the fee is approximately £30m a year. “It would be preferable for the BBC to release the information willingly to the licence fee paying public. In the face of their refusal to do so, we have been forced to rely on Freedom of Information Act. “ ENDS
