MEDIA RELEASE: 1 IN 5 STUDENTS MISSING OUT SHOWS NEED FOR REAL SCHOOL CHOICE
11 March 2008 Responding the Government’s announcement that 18.4 per cent of students have been denied their first choice of school, Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think-tank has said that the state should stop submitting students to a lottery that can have enormous impact on their prospects. Shane Frith, director of Progressive Vision, said: “It is a national scandal that nearly a fifth of students miss out on their first choice of school. Subjecting young people to a lottery is an absurd system. The only sensible alternative is to ensure that students denied their first choice should be given the equivalent value of their education – about £5,500 a year – to take to any school of their choice. This would place power and choice with parents and pupils rather than with bureaucrats and politicians.” ENDS
