MEDIA RELEASE: INCREASED C. DIFF DEATHS ARE INEVITABLE WITHOUT MAJOR REFORM TO THE NHS 28 February 2008 Responding to the report by the Office of National Statistics which shows a rise of 72 per cent in fatal Clostridium difficile infections, Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think-tank, has said that it is time for major reform of British healthcare. Shane Frith, Director of Progressive Vision, said: “Reducing the number of deaths from C. diff infections will not happen through setting government targets or spending vast amounts of money. We will only see a substantial reduction in such hospital acquired infections by creating genuine choice for patients. The Labour government has vastly increased spending on the NHS to a bewildering lack of effect. It is time to consider radical changes in how healthcare is provided. “More spending is clearly not the answer – real reform is. Patients need to be given more control over their own healthcare through introducing personal health savings account. It will take political courage to achieve this, but patients are dying while politicians posture. ” ENDS
