MEDIA RELEASE: GOVERNMENT GAMBLES £5,000 PER HOUSEHOLD ON NORTHERN ROCK BUT WON’T LET YOU PLAY THE SLOTS 26 February 2008 Responding to the government’s reported decision to abandon the concept of a super-casino. Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think-tank, has said that the government is willing to gamble the money of British citizens, but won’t let them gamble it themselves. Mark Littlewood, Communications Director of Progressive Vision, said: “It is ridiculous, patronising and totally unacceptable that the government is willing to gamble £5,000 per household on the future of Northern Rock, but will not let us play slot machines with our own money. Under this government, reckless gambles can be taken by Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling, but not by the citizens themselves. If anyone has concerns about mature adults taking unacceptable financial risks, they should be worrying about the behaviour of the Chancellor of the Exchequer not the private decisions of the general public.” ENDS |
