MEDIA RELEASE: INCREASED BANK REGULATIONS WOULD HIT CUSTOMERS 14 January 2008 Commenting on the opening day of the High Court case relating to banking charges, Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think tank, has said banks need to be free to set charges and fees in the open market. Mark Littlewood, Communications Director of Progressive Vision, said: “The banking sector doesn’t make money from servicing most current accounts. Incurring charges always seems unfair. But if people want free access to writing and depositing cheques, withdrawing money and issuing and replacing of debit cards, the banks need to raise the money from somewhere. Banks should be clear about the costs they will charge. But account holders also need to be accept that they can’t expect banking services for free. Banks are businesses not charities.” ENDS |
