MEDIA RELEASE: GOVERNMENT SHOULD FAST-TRACK NUCLEAR POWER, BUT NOT SUBSIDISE IT. 10 January 2008 Responding to the government’s announcement giving the go-ahead for a new generation of nuclear power stations, Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think tank, has said that nuclear power should be fast-tracked but not subsidised. Shane Frith, Director of Progressive Vision, said: “We are told that climate change is one of the greatest threats facing mankind. Nuclear power could have a key role to play in lowering carbon emissions. The government would be fully justified in fast-tracking the creation of new nuclear power stations and ensuring petty planning laws do not hamper them. But if nuclear power is to be facilitated, it must not be subsidised. The taxpayer needs to be confident that all the costs associated with running and decommissioning nuclear power stations will be borne by the industry. ” ENDS |
