MEDIA RELEASE: ABANDON 2012 LONDON OLYMPICS NOW

10 December 2007

Responding to a government report that the cost of hosting the 2012 Olympics could rise yet again, Progressive Vision, the classical liberal think tank, has called for the games to be abandoned.

Mark Littlewood, Communications Director of Progressive Vision, said:

“This obscenely expensive project should be abandoned immediately. We should inform the International Olympic Committee today that London does not now intend to host the 2012 Olympics.

“The overall expenditure could now be over £10bn.  That’s twelve times the money wasted on the Millennium Dome. The cost is the equivalent of £150 for every man, woman and child in the country. Incredibly, the bill for the Olympics could now exceed that of the Iraq war.

“The financial mismanagement of the Olympic bid is breathtaking. The government should save itself any further embarrassment – and the taxpayer any further expense – by cancelling the games forthwith.”

Notes to editors:

The projected costs have already increased by 300% since the original bid and the government now concedes there’s a prospect of final bill exceeding £9.3bn.

The overall cost exceeds the £5bn anticipated cost to the government of Crossrail.
