MEDIA RELEASE: TESCO CHIEF DESERVES THREE CHEERS FOR CHEAP BOOZE 6 December 2007 Responding to the remarks by John Grogan MP, chairman of the all party beer group, that Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy is the “godfather of cheap binge drinking”, Shane Frith, Director of classical liberal think tank Progressive Vision, said: “Sir Terry Leahy and Tesco deserve our thanks for providing great value on alcoholic products in the run-up to Christmas. This is especially true if they are selling drinks at a loss. It beggars belief that Labour politicians seem to want supermarkets to raise their prices. How much you drink and what you are willing to pay for it is a matter for individuals – not for the government. This is typical of the miserly, nit-picking, interfering, attitude of the government. Responsible adults should raise three cheers for Tesco and two fingers to the nanny state.” ENDS
