MEDIA RELEASE: QUEEN’S SPEECH 6 November 2007 A Raft Of Meddling Measures From a Government Addicted to State Interference Responding to today’s Queen’s Speech, Shane Frith, Director of classical liberal think tank Progressive Vision, said: “The only discernible philosophy behind this Queen’s Speech is a determination to regulate and police more and more areas of our national life. This is a raft of meddling measures from a government addicted to state interference. “The proposed Housing and Regeneration Bill amounts to a bureaucrat’s charter. The last thing that is needed to meet Britain’s housing needs is the creation of new quangos. The government should abandon ridiculous categorisations such as “key workers” and “affordable housing” and liberalise the laws relating to planning. Local authorities and property developers are far better at determining the needs of their communities than a new agency in Whitehall.” ENDS
