MEDIA RELEASE: SUPERMARKETS SHOULD NOT BE BLAMED 31 October 2007 “Supermarkets provide an excellent, high quality, affordable service to British consumers. They should not be blamed for the low prices received by their suppliers. Farmers who complain about receiving too little money from supermarkets have only themselves to blame. If they are producing goods that are already in oversupply, they need to innovate, change products, lower costs or exit the market. “The practice of “land banking” is an inevitable consequence of inflexible planning laws. In a more sensible planning environment, it would be impractical for a supermarket chain to buy up all the land that could be used by a local competitor. Restrictive planning laws lower the number of potential locations for competitors – making the purchase of this land by one company possible. “Supermarkets are already over-regulated. The consumer would get a better deal if some of these regulations were eased or abolished, rather than added to.” ENDS |
